Facebook says it’s not using location data to suggest friends, even after admitting it was

OK Facebook, you really need to make up your mind about what you say in public. And it would probably be a lot easier if you didn’t sneak certain features past your customers. The social network recently admitted to using smartphone location data to recommend friends to people, after someone discovered a recommendation that had no other reasonable explanation than the harvest and use of location data.

But now, Facebook says that’s not what it’s doing at all.

DON’T MISS: The iPhone 7 nightmare

“Location information by itself doesn’t indicate that two people might be friends,” a Facebook spokesperson told Fusion a few days ago. “That’s why location is only one of the factors we use to suggest people you may know.”

As Fusion reports, multiple people took to the internet to reveal they also received weird friend recommendations in the past, likely based on location information – check out these Reddit and Slashdot threads.

Fusion says that on Monday night after seeing plenty of negative feedback, Facebook reversed its stance on the issue. The company dug further into the matter and found that “we’re not using location data, such as device location and location information you add to your profile, to suggest people you may know.”

Facebook did run a pilot late last year that used location data for the friend suggestion feature. But it was never rolled out to the general public.

“We ran a small test to use city-level location to better rank existing [“People You May Know] candidates and not all were aware that the test had ended,” a Facebook spokesperson told Fusion. “The test ran for four weeks at the end of 2015.”

So does this mean the people who complained online about having seen location-based suggestions in Facebook were all part of that test? That’s not likely, and Facebook didn’t explain how these strange recommendations like the one reported by Fusion earlier this week would be possible if location data isn’t used.

Fusion speculates that Facebook could be looking at IP addresses and wireless networks rather than GPS or cellular location data to determine location and issue recommendations. The site also says that the Federal Trade Commission may be happy to learn that Facebook is using such a feature without proper consent from users. The FTC recently fined a mobile advertising company $4 million because it figured out location information based on wireless network data and tracked hundreds of millions of consumers’ locations without their explicit consent.

Radical Custom-Made HE-MAN-Style STAR WARS Action Figures

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe just received a gloriously radical action figure Star Wars mashup. These action figures were created by Sillof, who is a master at creating custom-made figures. We’ve posted a few of his collections in the past, but his latest series is geeky perfection. There’s a set of heroes and villains and they all have an extremely cool look. The Star Wars characters have never looked so muscular and badass.

The artist says:

Most boys who grew up in the 80’s had certain staple toy lines they played with, among them were Star Wars and He-Man. What they may have not understand was how much the latter owed the the former.   As a kid we just enjoyed these diverse worlds populated with great characters. Most kids, myself included, did not realize at that time that the Masters of the Universe was essentially a mash up of Conan the Barbarian and Star Wars with some of the style of Frank Frazetta and elements of Flash Gordon (of course Star Wars already owed much to that universe as seen here.) This line is intended as a commentary on the similarities of both toy universes. This in not a mash up or intended be “Look at this character dressed as that character”. Rather, it imagines a world in which the similarities are extended to place the Star Wars archetypes inside the Masters of the Universe world. As a further challenged I tried to use parts exclusive to the MOTUC figures with little additional sculpting or parts from other lines. This was the line I was working on and building in the Lucasfilm approved documentary I was featured in entitled “In a Galaxy” (more about that here.)  So without further ado…

Stick figure safety videos from Metro Los Angeles are equal parts hilarious and violent

When I took Drivers Ed way back when, I remember being shown unusually graphic videos from the 1960s which depicted horrific scenes recorded in the aftermath of particularly gruesome accidents. The message was clear, if not a bit overdone: driving can be exceedingly dangerous and you better obey the rules of the road lest you wind up in a video like this.

Perhaps looking to these videos for inspiration, Metro Los Angeles this week released five animated videos that illustrate all of the horrific things that can happen if you don’t respect the safety guidelines that govern train transit.

DON’T MISS: iPhone 7 will be Apple’s riskiest iPhone release yet

The videos, while being nothing more than black and yellow animations featuring stick figures, are surprisingly violent and graphic. Even the video titles themselves don’t leave much to the imagination, with “Dismount or dismembered?” being one such example. Since their release this week, the videos have gone somewhat viral, if only because it’s not too often that we see a public transit outfit release something that was seemingly lifted from an entirely different generation. And naturally, some can’t help but view these safety videos as nothing more than comical.

So without further ado, here’s what Metro Los Angeles decided to unleash upon the public earlier this week.

First up, we have “Present or pulverized?” which highlights the danger of being locked into your phone, oblivious to the environment around you.
